What is individual counselling?

Individual counselling, also called one-to-one therapy, personal counselling or psychotherapy, is a private conversation between you and a trained psychologist. Unlike advice from friends or family, it is confidential, non-judgemental and guided by evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Your psychologist helps you understand your thoughts, feelings and patterns, and gives you practical tools to cope and feel better. At Chum Wellness every session is with a certified psychologist, and you can see each psychologist’s experience and fee before you book.

I took counselling from Saima Apu for some personal issues. She has been really supportive, taking what I say into account and adapting the way she tackles issues depending on how I respond. How individual counselling works at Chum

What happens in sessions, the methods our psychologists use, how long it takes, and how to choose between online and in person.

Signs it may be time to talk to someone

Most people wait far too long before speaking to a psychologist, usually because they think their problem is “not serious enough”. You do not have to be in crisis. Individual counselling helps most when it starts early, before stress turns into burnout or low mood into depression.

  • Worry that will not switch off: racing thoughts, a tight chest, trouble falling asleep, or panic that comes out of nowhere.
  • Low mood for two weeks or more: sadness, emptiness or losing interest in things you used to enjoy.
  • Feeling stuck or overwhelmed: by work, study, money, family pressure or a big decision you cannot make alone.
  • A loss or a frightening event: a death, a breakup, an accident or something that still replays in your mind.
  • Patterns you want to change: overthinking, harsh self-criticism, anger, habits or relationships that keep going the same way.
  • Wanting a private space: somewhere to talk honestly that no one else needs to know about.

In a crisis, call 999. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or thinking about self-harm, this is a medical emergency. Call 999 (national emergency) or go to the nearest hospital. Individual counselling is not a crisis service.

What happens in your first session

The first session is simply a conversation, usually 50 to 60 minutes. There is nothing you have to say, and nothing is judged.

  1. 1
Your story, in your words: what brought you in, how long it has been going on, and how it affects your sleep, work, studies and relationships.
  2. 2
Understanding the bigger picture: your psychologist asks about your history, daily life and support around you, so nothing important is missed.
  3. 3
A shared direction: together you agree what you want to change and how you will know it is working.
  4. 4
Something to take away: most people leave the first session with one practical step, such as a breathing or grounding technique, a sleep routine or a thought-record to try.

Types of psychotherapy we use

For most concerns, talk therapy is the first-line approach. Our psychologists choose the method that fits your concern, and often combine them. You do not need to know the names: your psychologist explains what you are doing and why.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps you spot the thoughts and habits that keep anxiety, low mood or stress going, and practise new ones. The most researched talk therapy for anxiety and depression.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Learning to make room for difficult feelings instead of fighting them, while moving towards what matters to you.

EMDR therapy

A structured method for processing traumatic memories, so they feel less vivid and less distressing.

Mindfulness-based therapy

Simple attention skills that calm the body, reduce overthinking and help prevent depression from returning.

Person-centred therapy

A warm, accepting space to explore what you feel and want, at your own pace, without being told what to do.

Solution-focused brief therapy

A short, practical approach that builds on what already works for you, useful for a specific problem or decision.

See all therapy approaches our psychologists use.

How many sessions you may need

1 to 3 sessions

A clearer picture of what is going on, first coping tools, and a plan. Some people come for a single decision or a short rough patch.

4 to 8 sessions

The most common range for stress, worry, grief or a recent life change. Most people notice a real difference here.

8 sessions or more

Longer-standing depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma or patterns that go back years usually need steadier, ongoing work.

Sessions are usually weekly at first, then every two weeks as you improve. You can pause or stop at any time, and there is no package to buy.

Online or in person

Online, anywhere: secure video or audio sessions from home, work or abroad. Research shows online therapy works about as well as face-to-face for anxiety and depression. Good for people outside Dhaka, busy professionals and Bangladeshis living abroad.
In person in Dhaka: a quiet chamber away from home, which some people find easier to open up in. Our psychologists see clients in Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Moghbazar, Green Road, Banani and other areas.
Same psychologist, both ways: many psychologists offer both, so you can start online and switch to in person, or the other way round.

Individual, couple, family or child counselling?

Individual counselling focuses on you. If the main difficulty is between two or more people, another format may fit better. If you are not sure, start with individual counselling and your psychologist will help you decide.

Individual counsellingOne-to-one, about your own feelings, thoughts and life. Best for anxiety, low mood, stress, trauma, grief, self-esteem and personal decisions.
Couple and marriage counsellingYou and your partner together, about communication, trust, conflict or intimacy.
Family counsellingSeveral family members, about tension at home, in-laws, parenting or a family crisis.
Child and teen counsellingFor children and teenagers aged 4 to 17, with parents involved at each step.

Confidentiality

What stays private

Everything you share in individual counselling is confidential. It is not shared with your family, employer, university or anyone else without your written consent. Sessions are private one-to-one, online or in a closed chamber.

The one exception

If there is a serious risk to your life or someone else’s, your psychologist may need to act to keep people safe. They will talk this through with you wherever possible. See our confidentiality policy.

Psychologist or psychiatrist?

A psychologist provides talk therapy and is the right first step for most people. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication, which may help with severe depression, bipolar disorder or psychosis. If your psychologist thinks medication could help, they will tell you and can work alongside a psychiatrist in Dhaka, so you get one joined-up plan.

The bottom line

You do not have to wait until things fall apart. A few private conversations with a certified psychologist can help you understand what is happening, feel less alone with it and find practical ways forward. At Chum Wellness you choose your psychologist, see the fee up front, and talk in Bangla or English, online or in person.

Questions people ask

Individual counselling: FAQs

What is individual counselling?

Individual counselling, also called one-to-one therapy, personal counselling or psychotherapy, is a private conversation between you and a certified psychologist. It is confidential, non-judgemental and guided by evidence-based methods such as CBT, so you understand what you are going through and learn practical ways to feel better.

Is counselling the same as psychotherapy?

They overlap. Counselling usually focuses on a current problem such as stress, grief or a difficult decision, while psychotherapy works more deeply on long-standing patterns, anxiety, depression or trauma. At Chum Wellness both are provided by certified psychologists, and your psychologist adjusts the approach to what you need.

How is individual counselling different from talking to a friend?

A friend can support you, but a psychologist is trained, neutral and bound by confidentiality. Counselling uses proven methods to help you understand what is happening and change it, without judgement and without affecting your relationships.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a conversation. You share what brought you in, your psychologist asks about your history and daily life, and together you agree what you want to work on. There is nothing you have to say, and you decide the pace.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people feel clearly better within 4 to 6 sessions, while longer-standing problems such as depression, trauma or OCD often need 8 to 20. Your psychologist reviews progress with you, and there is no obligation to commit to a fixed number.

How much does individual counselling cost in Bangladesh?

At Chum Wellness a one-to-one session usually costs between ৳1,000 and ৳5,500, depending on the psychologist’s experience. University students pay from ৳699 per online session with selected psychologists. The exact fee is shown on each profile before you book.

Is online counselling as effective as in person?

For most concerns, yes. Research shows video therapy works about as well as face-to-face sessions for anxiety and depression. Online suits people outside Dhaka, busy professionals and Bangladeshis abroad, while in person suits those who prefer a quiet room away from home.

Can I have sessions in Bangla, and will they stay private?

Yes to both. Most psychologists offer sessions in Bangla or English, and everything you share is confidential. Nothing is disclosed to family, employers or anyone else without your written consent, except where someone’s life is in danger.

Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist?

A psychologist provides talk therapy and is the right first step for most people. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication, which may help with severe depression, bipolar disorder or other conditions. If medication could help, your psychologist will tell you and can work alongside a psychiatrist.

How do I choose the right psychologist?

Look for someone trained in your main concern, who speaks your preferred language and whose fee and location suit you. Every Chum profile shows qualifications, experience, chamber and fee. If you are not sure, tell us what you are going through and our team will suggest a good match.
