In plain language: Grief is love with nowhere to go. There is no “right” way or timeline to grieve. Counselling does not remove the loss — it gives you a safe space to feel it, make sense of it, and slowly find a way to live alongside it.

The basics

What is grief?

Grief is the natural response to loss — most often the death of a loved one, but also divorce, illness, miscarriage, migration, or the loss of a job, home or way of life.

Grief is not only sadness. It can bring shock, anger, guilt, numbness, relief, anxiety and physical exhaustion — sometimes all at once, in waves. It does not move in neat stages, and it has no deadline. For most people the intensity slowly softens over time. For some, grief gets “stuck” — staying as raw months or years later, or feeling frozen and unable to move forward. In Bangladesh, strong family and faith support helps many people grieve, but there is often pressure to “be strong” and move on quickly, which can leave grief unspoken. Talking to a psychologist is not a sign you are failing to cope — it is a way to be supported through it.

How grief works

Grief moves back and forth

Healthy grieving is not a straight line through stages. Most people move back and forth between facing the loss and rebuilding daily life.

Loss-oriented
  • Crying and missing them
  • Looking at photos, visiting the grave
  • Yearning and remembering
Restoration-oriented
  • New routines and roles
  • Time off from grief
  • New plans and relationships
  1. Both sides are healthyGrieving and taking a break from grief are both part of coping.
  2. Stuck on one sideWhen you cannot step away from the loss, or cannot face it at all, support can help.
  3. At your own paceGrief counselling makes room for both, without rushing you to “move on”.

How it shows up

Signs grief may need support

Stuck or frozen

Feeling unable to move forward long after the loss.

Overwhelming waves

Grief that stays as intense as the first days, without any easing.

Guilt or anger

Being caught in “what if” and self-blame, or anger you cannot place.

Withdrawal

Pulling away from people, work or things you once cared about.

Low mood

When grief tips into ongoing depression, hopelessness or numbness.

Body & sleep

Exhaustion, appetite changes and disturbed sleep that do not ease.

There is no deadline for grief, and many families in Bangladesh expect people to carry on soon after the funeral rites. It may be time to talk to someone when the loss feels as heavy months later as it did in the first weeks, when everyday tasks feel impossible, or when guilt or anger will not ease. Reaching out is not a sign of weak faith or of forgetting the person you lost.

Getting better

How grief counselling helps

Grief counselling is not about “getting over” a loss — it is about learning to carry it.

A psychologist offers a safe, unhurried space to express what you feel without judgement, make sense of the loss, and cope with waves of grief. Approaches like person-centred therapy provide warmth and acceptance, while CBT can help with guilt, stuck thoughts or when grief has become depression. For grief tied to a traumatic loss, EMDR may help. There is no fixed number of sessions — support is shaped around you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is grief supposed to last?

There is no set timeline. For most people the intensity slowly softens, but there is no deadline and no “right” way to grieve. Support can help whether the loss was recent or long ago.

Is it normal to feel anger or guilt, not just sadness?

Yes. Grief can bring anger, guilt, relief, numbness and anxiety alongside sadness. These are all normal, and counselling gives you space to make sense of them.

Do I need counselling, or should I just give it time?

Time helps many people with the support of family and faith. Counselling is useful when grief feels stuck, overwhelming, or has tipped into depression — or simply when you need a space of your own to grieve.

Does grief counselling only cover death?

No. It also supports loss through divorce, miscarriage, illness, migration, or losing a job or way of life.

Is counselling available in Bangla and online?

Yes. Many Chum psychologists work in Bangla or English, online from anywhere in Bangladesh, with in-person sessions in Dhaka.

How much does it cost?

Private sessions usually cost about ৳1,000–৳4,500 depending on seniority, and student sessions are ৳1,000. The exact fee is shown before you book.
