Sleep & insomnia · Bangladesh
Lying awake for hours, a mind that will not switch off, waking exhausted — ongoing sleep problems are common in Bangladesh and closely tied to stress and anxiety. They are very treatable without relying on sleeping pills. Talk to a licensed psychologist online nationwide, or in person in Dhaka.
In plain language: Most long-term insomnia is kept going not by the body but by the mind — worry about sleep, irregular habits, and trying too hard to sleep. The gold-standard fix is not medication but CBT for insomnia (CBT-I), which retrains your sleep naturally.
The basics
Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — despite having the chance to sleep — and feeling tired during the day as a result.
Almost everyone sleeps badly sometimes. It becomes a disorder when it happens most nights for weeks and starts affecting your mood, focus and health. Often a stressful period triggers a few bad nights, and then worry about not sleeping takes over — you watch the clock, dread bedtime, and try to force sleep, which only keeps you awake. The original trigger fades, but the sleep problem stays. In Bangladesh, late-night screens, shift work, study pressure and caffeine make this cycle very common, and sleeping pills are often used as a first resort when therapy works better long term.
Why it happens
A racing, worried mind at night is the most common driver of insomnia.
Fearing another bad night creates pressure that itself prevents sleep.
Different sleep and wake times, long naps, and shift work confuse the body clock.
Late scrolling, bright light, caffeine and nicotine keep the brain alert.
Sleep problems and depression feed each other in both directions.
Noise, heat, light or an uncomfortable space can fragment sleep.
How it shows up
A bad night now and then is normal, especially around exams, Ramadan, a new baby or night shifts. It is worth talking to a psychologist when poor sleep happens three or more nights a week for a month or longer, when you start to dread bedtime, or when tiredness affects your work, study or mood. If you snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, see a doctor first, as that can be a medical sleep condition.

The most effective long-term treatment is therapy, not sleeping tablets.
CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is the internationally recommended first-line treatment. Working with a psychologist, you reset your body clock, break the bed-equals-worry link, calm the pre-sleep mind, and drop the habits that keep insomnia going. It draws on CBT and often mindfulness. Because anxiety and stress are so often underneath, treating those helps too. Sleeping pills can help briefly in a crisis but do not fix the cause and can create dependence, so a psychiatrist is involved only when genuinely needed.

Questions
Yes — and usually better. CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment and fixes the causes rather than masking them. Pills may help briefly but do not solve long-term insomnia and can create dependence.
When the day’s distractions stop, unprocessed worries surface — and worrying about not sleeping adds more pressure. Therapy teaches you to quiet this spiral and take the pressure off sleep.
Many people see real improvement within a short, structured course of CBT-I. Long-standing insomnia can take a little longer, and your psychologist reviews progress with you.
Often sleep problems are linked to stress, anxiety or low mood. A psychologist can help work out what is driving yours and treat the root, not just the symptom.
