In plain language: BPD means feeling emotions far more intensely and finding them very hard to regulate, which strains relationships and self-image. It is not a life sentence — therapy, especially DBT, helps people build stability and there is strong evidence people recover.

The basics

What is BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorder (also called Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder) is a condition where emotions are felt very intensely and are hard to manage.

People with BPD often experience rapid, powerful mood shifts, a deep fear of abandonment, unstable and intense relationships, an unclear or changing sense of self, impulsive behaviour, chronic feelings of emptiness, and sometimes self-harm or suicidal thoughts. It usually develops from a mix of temperament and difficult or invalidating early experiences. BPD carries a lot of stigma — including among some professionals — but that stigma is outdated. It is one of the most treatable conditions of its kind, and with the right therapy most people improve significantly and many no longer meet the diagnosis over time.

How BPD feels from the inside

Emotions that rise faster, higher and longer

People with BPD are not being dramatic. Their emotions tend to switch on faster, hit harder and take longer to settle, which makes relationships and decisions feel overwhelming.

  1. FasterHigh sensitivity means small triggers can set strong feelings off quickly.
  2. StrongerFeelings reach an intensity that can make it hard to think clearly in the moment.
  3. Slower to settleIt takes longer to return to calm, so the next trigger often lands before you have recovered.

How it shows up

Signs of BPD

Intense emotions

Powerful feelings that shift quickly and are hard to calm.

Fear of abandonment

Strong fear of being left, and efforts to avoid it.

Unstable relationships

Intense relationships that swing between closeness and conflict.

Unclear self-image

A shifting sense of who you are and what you want.

Impulsivity

Impulsive actions, and sometimes self-harm to cope with pain.

Emptiness

Chronic feelings of emptiness or numbness.

Everyone has strong feelings and difficult relationships at times. BPD is different: a long-standing pattern, usually since the teens or early twenties, where emotions flare fast and take a long time to settle, and fear of being left shapes how you act with the people you love. In Bangladesh it is often dismissed as “attitude” or “drama”, which leaves people feeling more alone. BPD is one of the most treatable personality conditions, and DBT was built for it. If you have self-harm urges right now, call 999 or go to the nearest hospital first.

Getting better

How BPD is treated

BPD responds very well to specialised therapy — there is real, evidence-based hope.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was designed specifically for BPD and is the leading treatment: it builds skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and relationships. CBT and trauma-focused work also help, since trauma often underlies BPD. Where mood or other symptoms need it, a psychiatrist may support with medication. Therapy takes time and commitment, but the evidence is clear: people get better.
