In plain language: Overthinking feels like problem-solving, but it is really the mind going in circles without reaching an answer. Therapy teaches you to notice the loop early and step out of it — so your thoughts work for you, not against you.

The basics

What is overthinking?

Overthinking means getting stuck in repetitive thinking — either rumination (replaying the past) or worry (dreading the future).

Thinking things through is healthy when it leads to a decision. Overthinking is different: the same thoughts go round and round with no resolution, draining energy and raising anxiety. You might lie awake analysing a text message, imagine everything that could go wrong, or struggle to make simple decisions for fear of choosing wrong. It often comes with a belief that if you just think hard enough, you will feel safe or certain — but certainty never comes, so the loop continues. Overthinking is closely tied to anxiety, low mood and perfectionism, and it responds very well to therapy.

How overthinking works

Going round in circles vs moving forward

Overthinking feels like solving the problem, but it circles the same questions and pulls mood down. Useful thinking ends in a next step.

  1. Spot the spiralQuestions like “what if” and “why did I” repeat without an answer. That is the signal to stop.
  2. Name itSaying “I am worrying about the exam again” creates distance from the thought.
  3. Choose one stepTurn the worry into one small action, or set it aside for a planned worry time.

Why it happens

What drives overthinking?

Anxiety

An alert mind scans for threats and tries to “think its way” to safety.

Need for certainty

Low tolerance for not-knowing keeps you searching for a guaranteed answer.

Perfectionism

Fear of making the wrong choice turns decisions into endless analysis.

Fear of judgement

Replaying interactions, worried about what others thought of you.

Unprocessed stress

Big pressures with no outlet surface as constant mental churn.

Habit

The more you ruminate, the more automatic the loop becomes over time.

How it shows up

Signs of overthinking

  • Replaying past conversations or mistakes
  • Imagining worst-case scenarios about the future
  • Trouble making decisions, or second-guessing them
  • A mind that will not switch off, especially at night
  • Seeking reassurance but never feeling settled
  • Physical tension, tiredness and poor focus
  • Feeling stuck and unable to act

Everyone replays conversations and plans ahead sometimes. It is worth talking to a psychologist when the loop takes up hours of your day, keeps you awake at night, stops you making decisions, or leaves you drained and low. Overthinking is often the visible part of anxiety or depression, so a good psychologist looks at what is underneath it as well as the thoughts themselves.

Getting better

How overthinking is treated

Therapy helps you change your relationship with your thoughts — not by stopping thinking, but by stepping out of the loop.

CBT helps you spot rumination early, question unhelpful thinking styles, and shift from endless analysis to action. Mindfulness-based approaches teach you to notice thoughts without being pulled into them, and ACT helps you accept uncertainty and refocus on what matters. Because overthinking usually sits on top of anxiety, treating the anxiety helps the loop settle. Most people feel a real difference within a few sessions.

What to expect

What recovery looks like

Getting comfortable acting without needing to be 100% sure.

More calm, clearer decisions, and better sleep.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is overthinking a mental illness?

Overthinking is not a diagnosis on its own, but it is often a core feature of anxiety and low mood. When it affects your sleep, decisions or wellbeing, it is worth treating — and it responds well to therapy.

How is overthinking different from problem-solving?

Problem-solving moves toward a decision and then stops. Overthinking circles the same thoughts without resolution, raising anxiety instead of easing it.

Can therapy really stop overthinking?

Therapy does not aim to stop you thinking — it helps you notice unhelpful loops early and step out of them, so they lose their grip. Most people gain real control within a few sessions.

Do I need medication?

Usually not. Overthinking responds well to talk therapy. If it is part of a more severe anxiety or mood condition, a psychiatrist may be involved — but therapy is the first step.

Is counselling available in Bangla and online?

Yes. Many Chum psychologists work in Bangla or English, online from anywhere in Bangladesh, with in-person sessions in Dhaka.

How much does it cost?

Private sessions usually cost about ৳1,000–৳4,500 depending on seniority, and student sessions are ৳1,000. The exact fee is shown before you book.
