Addiction · Bangladesh
Whether it is substances, alcohol, smoking, gambling or something you cannot stop despite the harm — addiction is treatable, and change is possible without shame. Talk to a licensed psychologist online nationwide, or in person in Dhaka.
In plain language: Addiction is not a lack of willpower — it is a pattern the brain gets locked into, often to cope with pain or stress. Therapy helps you understand what drives it, build motivation to change, and prevent relapse, at your own pace.
The basics
Addiction is continuing a behaviour — using a substance or an activity — despite it causing harm, and finding it very hard to stop.
It can involve alcohol, drugs (including yaba and cannabis), smoking, gambling, gaming, pornography or other compulsive behaviours. What they share is a cycle: the behaviour brings short-term relief or reward, so the brain craves it more, while the harm grows. Addiction is often a way of coping with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression or emptiness. In Bangladesh, stigma and secrecy keep many people from seeking help until crisis point — but earlier support works better. Addiction is a health condition, not a moral failure, and recovery is genuinely possible.
How addiction works
Using brings fast relief, but guilt, shame and withdrawal become new triggers. Therapy adds exits at every step of the cycle.

How it shows up
Using or doing more than intended, and struggling to cut down.
Strong urges that dominate thoughts and decisions.
Continuing even though it damages health, work or relationships.
Hiding the behaviour and feeling shame about it.
Needing more to get the same effect over time.
Relying on it to manage stress, sleep or difficult feelings.
Addiction is often hidden in Bangladesh because of shame, and families may only notice when money, work or health start to suffer. It is worth reaching out when you have tried to cut down and could not, when you hide how much you use, or when you feel you need it just to feel normal. If you drink alcohol or take sleeping pills or other drugs every day, do not stop suddenly on your own, as withdrawal can be dangerous; a psychiatrist can guide a safe plan alongside counselling.

Therapy meets you where you are — no lectures, no shame — and builds real, lasting change.
Motivational interviewing helps you resolve mixed feelings and build your own motivation to change. CBT helps you understand triggers, manage cravings and prevent relapse, while addressing the anxiety, depression or trauma often underneath. Family sessions can rebuild trust and support. For physical dependence (for example alcohol or drugs), medical detox under a doctor may be needed first — a psychiatrist can advise, and we can guide you safely.
What to expect
An honest, private space to talk about what is really happening.
Working out your own reasons and readiness to change.
Skills for cravings, high-risk situations and relapse prevention.
Addressing the causes and rebuilding health and relationships.
If there is an overdose, severe withdrawal, or thoughts of self-harm, treat it as a medical emergency. Call 999 or go to the nearest hospital. Online counselling is not a crisis or detox service.

Fees depend on the psychologist’s seniority. Student sessions are ৳1,000, and the exact fee is shown on each profile before you book — no hidden charges.
