About Arafat

Dr. S. M. Yasir Arafat is a psychiatrist and suicidologist. He completed his MD in Psychiatry at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), where he received the Chancellor Gold Medal, and his MBBS at Dhaka Medical College. He also holds an MPH in Health Economics and an MBA. He works as an Associate Consultant in the Department of Psychiatry at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital, Dhaka, and is an Associate Professor (Adjunct) at Frontier University Garowe.

As a psychiatrist he assesses and diagnoses mental health conditions and prescribes and reviews medication when it is needed, for concerns such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and self-harm, sexual health problems, bipolar disorder and psychosis. He works alongside psychologists when therapy is part of the plan.

He is one of the leading researchers on suicide in Bangladesh and South Asia, with more than 350 peer-reviewed articles, and was a Visiting Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol, UK. He is an Associate Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
