In plain language: ADHD is not laziness or low intelligence. It is a difference in how the brain manages attention, activity and impulses. A proper assessment tells you whether ADHD explains the struggle, or whether something else does, so that you, or your child, get the right help.

Understanding ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity and impulse control. It starts in childhood and often continues into adult life. It is not laziness, bad parenting or low intelligence.

ADHD has two symptom groups, inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Mostly inattention is the inattentive presentation, mostly hyperactivity-impulsivity is the hyperactive-impulsive presentation, and both together is the combined presentation.InattentionHyperactivity & impulsivityMostlyinattentiveoften missed:the quietdaydreamerCombinedboth groupsMostlyhyperactive-impulsivemore visible, often in youngchildren
The three ways ADHD can present, as described in DSM-5.
  • Inattention

Losing focus, missing details, forgetting and losing things.

Children: daydreaming, unfinished homework. Adults: missed deadlines, half-done tasks.

  • Hyperactivity

Restlessness and being always on the go.

Children: running, climbing, leaving the seat. Adults: inner restlessness, fidgeting in meetings.

  • Impulsivity

    Acting or speaking before thinking.

Children: blurting answers, not waiting a turn. Adults: interrupting, rash spending or decisions.

About 1 in 20 children and about 1 in 40 adults worldwide have ADHD. Many adults in Bangladesh were never assessed as children and grew up being called careless or “not trying hard enough”. Sources: Polanczyk et al., 2015; Fayyad et al., WHO World Mental Health Surveys, 2017.

Six questions about everyday life. Your answers stay in your browser.

This is not an ADHD test or a diagnosis. It is a short self-check to help you decide whether a professional assessment is worth it. Only a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose ADHD.

Scales and tools

The scales and tools we use

No blood test, brain scan or computer game can diagnose ADHD. A trained psychologist brings together a careful history, validated rating scales and the DSM-5 criteria.

  • Everyone

    DSM-5 criteria

The recognised diagnostic standard. 18 symptoms in two groups: 9 for inattention, 9 for hyperactivity and impulsivity.

  • Everyone

    Clinical interview and history

Current difficulties, early childhood, schooling, family, sleep and mood.

  • Adults

    ASRS v1.1

The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, developed with the World Health Organization. 18 questions about the past 6 months.

  • Adults

    CAARS

Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales: detailed ratings of symptoms and everyday problems, from you and, where possible, someone who knows you well.

  • Adults

    DIVA-5 interview

A structured diagnostic interview that goes through each DSM-5 symptom in childhood and in adulthood, with real-life examples.

  • Children

    Conners Parent Rating Scale

Parents rate how often behaviours happen at home, including attention, activity, learning and getting along with others.

  • Children

    Play-based observation

How your child plays, waits, shifts attention and follows instructions: things a questionnaire cannot show.

Adult ADHD testing scale

The adult ADHD testing scale: ASRS v1.1 explained

The most widely used adult ADHD screening scale in Bangladesh is the ASRS v1.1 (Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale), developed with the World Health Organization. It has 18 questions based on the DSM symptom criteria for inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. The first 6 questions (Part A) are the screener: if 4 or more answers fall in the higher-frequency range, a full assessment is recommended. ASRS is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. At Chum, a clinical psychologist combines it with the CAARS rating scales and the DIVA-5 structured interview, checked against the DSM-5 criteria.

  1. APart A: 6 questionsThe screener. 4 or more answers in the higher-frequency range suggest a full assessment.
  2. BPart B: 12 questionsA fuller picture of how often each symptom happens.
  3. Clinical interview + DSM-5A psychologist checks childhood history, impact and look-alikes, then decides.

How it shows up

Signs of ADHD in children and adults

In children ADHD is often visible: running, climbing, unfinished schoolwork. In adults it is often hidden: inner restlessness, missed deadlines and a feeling of always being behind.

In children

  • Seems not to listen Daydreams and needs instructions repeated.
  • Careless mistakes Rushes homework and leaves work unfinished.
  • Loses things Pencils, tiffin boxes and books go missing again and again.
  • Cannot sit still Fidgets, leaves the seat, runs and climbs at the wrong time.
  • Cannot wait a turn Blurts out answers and interrupts games.
  • Big feelings Quick frustration, and low confidence from constant scolding.

In adults

  • Focus difficulties Trouble concentrating, or hyper-focusing on some things only.
  • Disorganisation Struggling with time, planning and deadlines.
  • Restlessness Feeling on the go, or mentally unable to settle.
  • Impulsivity Interrupting, or rash decisions with money or work.
  • Procrastination Hard to start routine or boring tasks.
  • Emotional ups and downs Quick frustration and low self-esteem from years of struggle.

Is it really ADHD?

What else can look like ADHD

Poor focus has many causes. A good assessment checks these before saying ADHD, and sometimes finds more than one.

  • Anxiety

A worried mind cannot settle, so attention slips.

  • Low mood

Low energy and slow thinking look like inattention.

  • Sleep problems

Poor sleep causes daytime fog and, in children, hyperactivity.

  • Learning difficulties

A child who struggles to read may switch off in class.

  • Autism

Shares some signs with ADHD, and the two can occur together.

  • Stress and trauma

A hard time at home or school makes anyone jumpy and distracted.

  • Hearing or vision

A child who cannot hear or see well can seem not to listen.

  • Medical causes

Thyroid problems or some medicines can affect focus. A doctor checks these.

After the assessment

How ADHD is supported

Support combines understanding, practical strategies and, when needed, medical input.

For children, the most useful help is usually with parents and school: clear routines, behaviour strategies that work with a child’s attention rather than against it, and simple classroom adjustments. For adults, a psychologist helps you understand your patterns, build systems for focus, time and organisation, and ease the anxiety, low mood or self-criticism that often come with undiagnosed ADHD. CBT and coaching-style approaches are especially useful. If medication may help, a psychiatrist assesses and prescribes, and we guide you to the right step.

  • Understand the brainMaking sense of the patterns without shame or blame.
  • Build systemsTools for focus, time and follow-through at home, school or work.
  • Ease the extrasAnxiety, low mood and self-criticism that often come with it.
  • Play to strengthsUsing energy and creativity, with support where it is needed.

Therapy sessions after the assessment cost ৳1,000–৳4,500, depending on the psychologist’s seniority. Student sessions are ৳1,000, and the exact fee is shown on each profile before you book.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does an ADHD test cost in Bangladesh?

At Chum the ADHD assessment package is ৳5,000 online or ৳5,500 in person, for adults and children, with either assessor. It includes a 1-hour assessment with a clinical psychologist and a written report in 3 working days. Ongoing therapy sessions start from ৳1,000, and the exact fee is shown before you book.

What happens during an ADHD assessment?

The psychologist takes a detailed history (what is happening now, what you or your child were like in childhood, and how life at home, school or work is affected), uses validated rating scales, and, for children, observes them in play. The findings are checked against the DSM-5 criteria, and other possible explanations such as anxiety, sleep or learning difficulties are considered.

Which scales and tests do you use for ADHD?

DSM-5 criteria for everyone. For adults, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1), the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) and the DIVA-5 structured diagnostic interview. For children, the Conners Parent Rating Scale and play-based observation, alongside a detailed interview with the parent or guardian.

What scale is used for adult ADHD testing in Bangladesh?

The most widely used screening scale is the ASRS v1.1 (Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale), developed with the World Health Organization: 18 questions based on the DSM symptom criteria. At Chum, a clinical psychologist uses the ASRS v1.1 together with the CAARS rating scales and the DIVA-5 structured interview, checked against the DSM-5 criteria. Children are assessed with the Conners Parent Rating Scale and play-based observation.

What is a positive ASRS score?

On the ASRS v1.1, the first 6 questions (Part A) are the screener. If 4 or more of those answers fall in the higher-frequency range, the result is consistent with ADHD and a full assessment is recommended. A positive screen is not a diagnosis.

Can the ASRS diagnose ADHD on its own?

No. The ASRS is a screening questionnaire. A diagnosis needs a clinical interview that checks childhood history, how much the symptoms affect daily life in more than one setting, and other possible causes, which is what a psychologist does in the 1-hour assessment.

Who carries out ADHD assessments at Chum?

Two clinical psychologists: Tanvirul Alam (Assistant Clinical Psychologist, M.Phil in Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka; in person in Dhaka, or online) and Sadia Arifin Runa (Assistant Clinical Psychologist and child psychologist, MS in Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka; in person in Sylhet or online). Both are BCPS members.

Can I do an ADHD test online in Bangladesh?

Yes. Both assessors, Tanvirul Alam and Sadia Arifin Runa, carry out ADHD assessments online, for people anywhere in Bangladesh or abroad. In person: Dhaka with Tanvirul Alam, or Sylhet with Sadia Arifin Runa.

Can my child be tested for ADHD?

Yes. For children the psychologist uses DSM-5 criteria, the Conners Parent Rating Scale and play-based observation, and talks with you about home and school. The report explains the findings and practical next steps for home and school.

How long does an ADHD test take?

The assessment itself takes about 1 hour. Your written report is ready in 3 working days.

How should I prepare for an ADHD assessment?

Bring anything that shows the pattern over time: school reports or teacher comments, any previous assessments, and a list of current medicines. For adults, it can help if a parent or sibling can share what you were like as a child. For children, a parent or guardian who knows their daily routine should attend.

Is there a blood test or brain scan for ADHD?

No. No blood test, brain scan or computer game can diagnose ADHD on its own. Diagnosis is clinical: a careful history, validated rating scales and the judgement of a trained psychologist or psychiatrist.

Can adults really have ADHD if they were never diagnosed as children?

Yes. ADHD is present from childhood but is often missed, especially where awareness was low. Many adults are recognised only later, and support still helps a great deal.

Do I need medication for ADHD?

Not necessarily. Many people benefit from psychological strategies, parent support and coaching. Psychologists do not prescribe; if medication may help, a psychiatrist assesses and prescribes, and we can refer you.

Who can diagnose ADHD in Bangladesh?

A clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist. At Chum, a clinical psychologist carries out the ADHD assessment against DSM-5 criteria. If medication may help, a psychiatrist assesses and prescribes, and we can refer you.

What is the difference between ADHD assessment and autism screening?

They look for different things. ADHD is about attention, activity and impulse control; autism is about social communication and repetitive or restricted patterns. Some children and adults have both. Autism screening is a separate package of ৳5,000 with the same two psychologists.

Is ADHD linked to anxiety or low self-esteem?

Often, yes. Years of struggling undiagnosed can lead to anxiety, low mood and self-criticism, which therapy also helps.

Is the 2-minute self-check on this page a diagnosis?

No. It is a short self-check to help you decide whether a professional assessment is worth it. Only a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose ADHD.
