Health anxiety (sometimes called hypochondria) is a persistent fear of having or developing a serious illness, despite reassurance from doctors and tests. It is exhausting — and it is a recognised, treatable anxiety problem, not “making things up”.

Signs of health anxiety

  • Frequently checking your body for signs of illness
  • Repeatedly searching symptoms online
  • Seeking reassurance from doctors or loved ones — that never lasts
  • Interpreting normal sensations as signs of serious disease
  • Either over-visiting doctors or avoiding them out of fear

The health-anxiety cycle

A normal body sensation triggers a fearful thought (“what if it is cancer?”), which raises anxiety, which causes more sensations, which “confirms” the fear. Checking and reassurance calm it briefly, then the worry returns stronger. Breaking this loop — not getting more tests — is the path out.

Getting help

First, see a doctor to rule out physical causes — that step matters. Once cleared, recurring health anxiety is very treatable with CBT, usually within a few months. Explore anxiety treatment and CBT therapy.

Frequently asked questions

Is health anxiety a real condition?

Yes. It is a recognised anxiety problem that causes genuine distress and responds well to therapy.

Why doesn’t reassurance help my health anxiety?

Reassurance calms you briefly, then the doubt returns — which is why seeking more of it keeps the cycle going. Therapy targets the cycle itself.

Should I keep getting medical tests?

Once a doctor has cleared you, repeated testing tends to feed the anxiety. CBT addresses the worry rather than chasing more reassurance.

Can health anxiety be cured?

Most people greatly reduce or overcome it with CBT and by gradually reducing checking and reassurance-seeking.

Why googling symptoms makes it worse

Searching symptoms online feels like taking control, but it almost always backfires — the internet offers worst-case answers, your anxiety latches onto them, and the fear grows. The same is true of repeatedly asking doctors or loved ones for reassurance: it calms you for an hour, then the doubt returns stronger. Breaking the checking habit, not getting more answers, is the path out.

Living well with health anxiety

Recovery does not mean never noticing your body — it means no longer treating every sensation as an emergency. With practice, and often with CBT, you learn to let sensations come and go without scanning for danger, and to trust that your body is usually just doing normal body things.

Understanding Health Anxiety

Health anxiety involves persistent worry about having or developing a serious illness, often despite medical reassurance. Normal bodily sensations — a headache, a skipped heartbeat, a twinge — get interpreted as signs of something grave. The worry feels protective, but it actually keeps the fear alive. Understanding health anxiety as an anxiety pattern, rather than a problem with your body, is central to recovering from it.

The Reassurance Trap

People with health anxiety often seek reassurance — repeated doctor visits, tests, or online symptom searching. Each brings brief relief, then the doubt returns, sometimes stronger. This cycle is the engine of health anxiety. Breaking it means gradually reducing reassurance-seeking and checking behaviours, which feels counterintuitive but is what allows the anxiety to settle over time.

Strategies That Genuinely Help

Helpful approaches include limiting symptom-googling and body-checking, postponing worry to a set ‘worry time,’ and learning to tolerate uncertainty rather than chasing certainty that does not exist. Building a fuller life — work, relationships, activities — naturally crowds out the space anxiety occupies. These changes are simple to describe but genuinely hard to do alone, which is where support helps.

When and How to Get Support

If health worries dominate your thoughts, drive repeated medical visits, or interfere with daily life, therapy can help substantially. Cognitive behavioural therapy for health anxiety is well established and effective, helping you change the thinking and behaviour patterns that sustain the fear. Working with a psychologist offers structure and support for changes that are difficult to make on your own.

Health Anxiety and the Internet

Searching symptoms online is one of the most common fuels for health anxiety. Search engines surface worst-case possibilities, and each click deepens the worry. A practical step is to set firm limits — no symptom-googling, no health forums during anxious spells. This feels difficult at first because checking provides momentary relief, but reducing it is one of the fastest ways to calm the cycle. Trusting an agreed plan with one doctor, rather than endless online searching, restores a sense of ground.

Building a Life Bigger Than the Worry

Health anxiety shrinks life to the size of the fear. Part of recovery is deliberately rebuilding the rest — work, relationships, hobbies, plans — so that worry has less room to expand into. This is not denial; it is refusing to let anxiety dictate your days. As you invest attention back into living, the constant monitoring of your body naturally loosens. A full, engaged life is both a goal of recovery and one of its most effective tools.

Reassurance From the Right Source

Part of recovering from health anxiety is learning to trust a single, sensible plan rather than chasing endless reassurance. Agreeing with one doctor on what genuinely warrants attention, and what does not, gives you a reliable anchor to return to when worry spikes. A psychologist can help you build this framework and stick to it, so that you respond to real concerns appropriately without being ruled by every passing sensation. The aim is a calm, proportionate relationship with your health — neither ignoring it nor being consumed by it — and that balance is very achievable with support.
