Meet your psychologist

In plain language: A depression assessment is a structured session with a clinical psychologist that answers three questions: is this depression, how severe is it, and what will help. It combines an interview based on the DSM-5 criteria with validated questionnaires such as the PHQ-9 and BDI-II. At Chum Wellness it takes about an hour, online or in person, and you get a written report within 3 working days. The fee is ৳5,000 online or ৳5,500 in person.

What it tells you

What a depression assessment can tell you

Is it depression?

Whether what you feel meets the criteria for a depressive disorder, or is better explained by stress, grief or a difficult time.

How severe it is

Mild, moderate or severe. This decides what kind of help makes sense, and how soon.

What else is going on

Anxiety, sleep problems, burnout, or mood swings that may point to bipolar disorder, which needs a different plan.

When it helps

When to get a depression assessment

Low mood for 2 weeks or more

Sadness, emptiness or no interest in things you used to enjoy, most days, for two weeks or longer.

Daily life is slipping

Work, study, sleep, eating or relationships are suffering, and rest does not fix it.

A doctor or family member asked

A doctor, employer, university or family member has asked for a proper assessment and report.

Before or during treatment

A baseline before therapy or medication, or a check on how much things have changed.

For a teenager

A teenager has become withdrawn, irritable or is falling behind, and you want to know what is going on.

The tools

Depression tests and scales we use

No single questionnaire can diagnose depression. The psychologist combines a clinical interview with validated scales, chooses the ones that fit your age and situation, and names every tool used in your report. Teenagers get versions made for their age, such as the PHQ-A.

Interview

Clinical interview

The heart of the assessment. The psychologist asks about mood, interest, sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, guilt and hope, and checks them against the DSM-5 criteria for depression.

Questionnaire

PHQ-9

Patient Health Questionnaire. 9 short questions about the last 2 weeks; a validated Bangla version exists. Shows how severe the symptoms are.

Questionnaire

BDI-II

Beck Depression Inventory, second edition. 21 questions on how you have felt over 2 weeks, scored 0 to 63.

Rated by the psychologist

HAM-D

Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The psychologist rates symptoms from the interview, including the physical ones such as sleep and appetite.

Questionnaire

GAD-7

Anxiety often comes with depression. 7 questions show whether worry and tension need attention too.

Screening

Mood and safety checks

Questions about past high or "too energetic" periods (bipolar disorder needs different care), and about thoughts of self-harm, so you get the right help quickly.

How a PHQ-9 score is read9 questions about the last 2 weeks, each scored 0 to 3, so the total runs from 0 to 27.
  • Minimal0–4
  • Mild5–9
  • Moderate10–14
  • Moderately severe15–19
  • Severe20–27

A score is a starting point, not a diagnosis. The psychologist reads it together with the interview, how long it has lasted and how much it affects daily life. Bands: Kroenke, Spitzer and Williams (2001).

Know the difference

Free online depression test vs a clinical assessment

A free online depression test, like our 2-minute self-check, is a good first step: it tells you whether your answers suggest you should look closer. It cannot diagnose. A score can be raised by stress, grief, poor sleep or a physical illness, and it cannot see what a trained psychologist sees in conversation.

A clinical assessment adds an interview against the DSM-5 criteria, checks for anxiety, mood swings and safety, rules out look-alikes, and ends with a written report and a plan. If the free check says you may be struggling, the assessment is the next step.

Before the session

How to prepare

  • Think about when the low mood started, and anything that happened around then.
  • Note changes in sleep, appetite, energy and concentration.
  • Bring a list of any medicines you take, and any earlier reports or prescriptions.
  • For online sessions, find a quiet, private place with a steady connection.
  • For a teenager, a parent or guardian joins part of the session.

Is a free online depression test enough?

It is a useful first step, not a diagnosis. Our free 2-minute self-check shows whether you should look closer. A clinical assessment confirms whether it is depression, how severe it is, and what will help.

Can the depression assessment be done online?

Yes. It can be done by video call from anywhere in Bangladesh or abroad, or in person at Green Road, Dhaka.

How long does it take, and when do I get the report?

Who carries out the assessment?

Tanvirul Alam, a clinical psychologist with an M.Phil and MS in Clinical Psychology from the University of Dhaka and a member of the Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society.

Will I be given medicine?

Can teenagers have a depression assessment?

Yes. Teenagers are assessed with age-appropriate scales, and a parent or guardian joins part of the session.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No. You can book directly. If a doctor has asked for the assessment, bring their note.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Your answers and report are shared only with you, and with a doctor or anyone else only if you choose.

What if I am having thoughts of ending my life?

Please do not wait for an assessment. Call 999 now, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
