A person who studies and applies psychological intervention in treating mental health problems is called a psychologist. A psychologist is a professional who practices psychology and studies mental states, perception, cognition, emotion, social processes, and behavior. Psychologists’ work often involves observation, experimentation, interpretation, and prediction of human behavior in different situations.
Psychologists usually acquire a bachelor’s degree in psychology, followed by a master’s degree or doctorate in psychology. For being able to do practice, psychologists need to have experience in dealing with clients during their internship period. However, in Bangladesh, any person with a degree or course in psychology can provide counseling services as there is no licensing system yet.
Like a psychiatrist, a psychologist does not provide any medicine or medical support rather she or he provides mental health support based on psychological theories. Different psychologists have a specialist in different sectors. Like a clinical psychologist mainly focuses on severe disorders, a counseling psychologist emphasizes daily life crises and family issues. Apart from this industrial psychologists and school psychologists have distinct sectors.
